It has been a formidable week for Blythewood boys’ basketball (9-12, 2-5). Friday night, the Bengals had to go on the road to play the state’s top ranked team, Irmo (19-0, 5-0). The Yellow Jackets held a 36-28 lead at halftime and then opened the second half on a 15-0 run and would eventually go on to defeat Blythewood 77-53. The third quarter was the difference in the game. The Irmo defense held the Bengals to just one field goal and forced seven turnovers. The Yellow Jackets had the advantage of shooting 18 more free throws than the Bengals. Blythewood head coach Zeke Washington believed Irmo was the more physical team.
“They physically whipped us,” Washington said.
After dealing with the number one team in the state, Blythewood was then saddled with going on the road to play the number seven team in the state, Spring Valley, Tuesday night. The Vikings never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 15-4 lead and rolled to a 76-51 victory. Before the game Washington knew his team had a tough task ahead of them.
“They’re (Spring Valley) good,” Washington said. “They like to run and they play physical.”
For the Vikings it was their eighth win in their last 10 games. Dominique Taylor and Perry Dozier Jr. led the way offensively for Spring Valley with 20 and 18 points respectively. Junior Sam Lake was the top scorer for Blythewood with 17 points including four buckets from downtown. The Bengals will now turn their attention to Lugoff-Elgin (8-11, 0-6) on Friday night.
