The Voice of Blythewood & Fairfield County

Dillon’s Path to Columbia

Mitchell Crosby (2) drops Newberry’s Jared Harmon for a sack.

For Dillon’s head coach Jackie Hayes this will be his seventh trip to the state championship game. Since 2004 he has led Dillon to a 100-16 record and he expects nothing less than a state championship.

“Our number one goal at Dillon High School every year is to play in the last game,” Hayes said.

Dillon was back-to-back state champions in 2009 and 2010 with both wins coming over Central and their only loss this season came from 3A Marlboro County. With Fairfield Central standing in the way of Hayes and another state championship, he doesn’t underestimate the Griffins one bit.

“No question about it that Fairfield Central will be the best team we’ve played this year,” he said.

Two keys in Dillon’s game plan

• Contain Fairfield’s speed. “They have speed at every position,” Hayes said.

• Stop the big play. “We need to make them drive the length of the field,” Hayes said.
