WINNSBORO: The Rev. William Henry “Bill” Porter departed this life and entered the joy of the Lord on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012 surrounded by his family. Born Oct. 31, 1930, the Rev. Porter was the son of the late Robert Paul and Bertha Lucretia Brannon Porter. He was married to the love of his life, Dorothy Elizabeth Shaw, for 58 years and pastored Grace Cathedral for 35 years. A godly and faithful servant, the Rev. Porter was greatly involved in his ministry and touched the lives of people from many different walks of life. The Rev. Porter was a U.S. Army Veteran and served on the boards and advisory committees of many charitable organizations.
In addition to his wife, Dot, the Rev. Porter is survived by two daughters, Sharon (Dennis) Marthers, Susanne (William) Arthur; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann-Marie (Heath) Batchelor, Nicholas Cole (Mary Katherine) Baker, Brannon William (Michelle) Marthers; and great grandchildren, Sawyer Hawke Batchelor and Cierra Melton.
The Rev. Porter was predeceased by brothers James Roy Porter, Alex Herbert Porter, Odell Jamison Porter, Robert Paul Porter; sisters Inez Porter Smith, Florence Porter Short, Glennie Porter Gunter, Mary Porter Whitmire, Callie Porter Hollis; and granddaughter, Constance Arielle Baker.
Funeral services for Reverend Porter were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012 at Grace Cathedral (8017 Winnsboro Road, Blythewood, S.C.) and were conducted by the Rev. Walter Ballenger. Burial followed at Oaklawn Cemetery in Winnsboro, S.C. The family received friends from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Grace Cathedral.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Cathedral or the Leukemia Society of South Carolina.
