Big plays by Spring Valley and some costly penalties and turnovers by Westwood combined to hand the Redhawks their fourth straight loss to start the 2012 season, 43-7, at Westwood.
Coming off a loss to Blythewood High School last Friday, Westwood Redhawks head coach Rodney Summers said he was looking for a big improvement from last week.
“We need to make better use of our special teams and to run the ball more,” Summers said before the game. “If we make mistakes the game can get out of hand early.”
And get out of hand it did.
Pivotal turnovers, largely interceptions, cost the ‘Hawks dearly. While the penalties were somewhat evenly divided, one unfortunate penalty resulted in a 2-point safety for the Vikings.
The Redhawks escaped the shutout in the fourth quarter with a touchdown run by Miquelle Canady. The extra point was missed, but a penalty on the kick was assessed against the Vikings, which gave the Redhawks a second chance, which they successfully converted for the extra point.
The Redhawks have one more non-region game against Ridge View High School, then it’s on to region play.
