The Voice of Blythewood & Fairfield County

Lady Bengals Continue Hot Streak

Blythewood continues its winning streak and has now won nine in a row.  After winning the Carolina Forest Tournament, the Lady Bengals went on the road to face non-region opponent Northwestern Aug. 29.  It was a battle, but Blythewood swept the match by a score of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-22.  Meredith Jones and Abreia Epps led the way with 16 kills apiece.  Gabriela Martinez had a team high 34 assists with just one error in her 35 attempts.  With that win Blythewood improved to 8-1 on the year.

The next day, the Lady Bengals made their home debut against the Silver Foxes of Dutch Fork.  But Dutch Fork wasn’t very foxy as they were swept in a match that took less than 60 minutes, 25-5, 25-10 and 25-12.

The student section made a ton of noise in the Lady Bengals home debut and head coach Mary Hall knows her team is well worth the price of admission.

“I want girls’ sports to get more respect, because they come in and put on a show,” Hall said. “We’re winning right now and I think we deserve to get some more fans in this gym so we can have some more support.”

In the first game of the match Jones started serving with Blythewood leading 8-3 and she would not relinquish the serve until the score was 22-3 a total of 14 unanswered points.  Jones would finish the game with a team high seven aces.

“She (Jones) knows how to finesse the ball and where to place it,” Hall said.

Epps and Jones led the way in attacking with 10 and eight kills respectively.  Ranked number two and three in the state, Epps has 82 kills on the year and Jones has 80.  Martinez was flawless with no errors on 21 assists.

“It’s always like that with her (Martinez),” Hall said. “She is an amazing setter with beautiful hands.”

Martinez has 173 assists for the year and her 7.2 average per game is ranked number one in the state.

After the sweep of Dutch Fork the Lady Bengals are now 9-1 on the year and lead the region (AAAA-IV).  Next up for Blythewood are two more non-region matches on the road against White Knoll Sept. 5 and at Aiken Sept. 6.

“They’re both going to be tough matches and I’m expecting we will have to put in work,” Hall said.
