Winnsboro: A memorial service for John Phillip Styron Sr., age 72, was held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, 2012 at the Winnsboro First Church of the Nazarene conducted by the Rev. Harry Varn and the Rev Kenneth Jackson. A private inurnment was held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family received friends in the church fellowship hall one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Styron died at Palmetto Health Richland on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012. He was the husband of Patricia “Pat” Styron and the son of the late William A. and Sue Bowen Styron. He was born on July 27, 1940 in Columbia, S.C. Mr. Styron was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and excelled at sales and motivational speaking. He was a man of faith who loved his Lord and loved his family. He was a Board Member of the Winnsboro First Church of the Nazarene. Mr. Styron also enjoyed all kinds of sports and riding his motorcycle.
In addition to Pat, his wife of 31 years, Mr. Styron is survived by two sons, Steven L. Styron and his wife Mary Patricia Davis Styron of Sandy Run, Michael Todd Cooper and his wife Terri of Indian Trail, N.C.; two daughters, Leslie S. Ferner of Colorado Springs, Col., Melissa C. Hicks and her husband James Hicks of Elgin; 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Mr. Styron was predeceased by a son, John Phillip Styron Jr. and a brother, William “Bill” A. Styron Jr.
In lieu of flowers, the family recommends memorials be made to Winnsboro Church of the Nazarene Men’s Ministry, 650 Ninth Street, Winnsboro, S.C. 29180.
