COLUMBIA: Gilbert William Ballentine, 84, of Columbia, died Monday, June 25, 2012. Born in Blythewood, S.C. on Oct. 4, 1927, he was a son of the late William Thomas Ballentine and Margaret Blanche Abell Ballentine. Gilbert was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II. He then went on to graduate from Clemson University and work in the textile industry. Gilbert was an avid golfer and member of Zion United Methodist Church. Survivors include his brother, Thomas Franklin Ballentine of Blythewood. Gilbert was preceded in death by his brother, Carroll E. Ballentine and a sister, M. Hilda Ballentine. The funeral service for Mr. Ballentine was held at 2 o’clock, Wednesday, June 27, at Zion United Methodist Church, 1150 Zion Church Road, Blythewood, with the Rev. Debbie Miller officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends at the church prior to the service. Shives Funeral Home assisted the family.
Pallbearers were members of the church: Richard Abell, Mike Dickert, Mike Griffith, John Jaynes, Ed Wilson and Woody Wilson.
