Surgery Sidelines Greiner

University of South Carolina freshman catcher Grayson Greiner, a Blythewood High School graduate, underwent surgery last week to repair a lateral meniscus tear to his left knee, sustained during a practice May 30. Although still listed on the active roster, Greiner missed the NCAA Super Regionals, which the Gamecocks wrapped up Monday in Columbia with a 5-1 win over Oklahoma.

Greiner, along with left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery, earned Freshman All-America honors as announced by Collegiate Baseball June 6. Greiner, a SEC All-Freshman selection, has played in 55 games with 48 starts and owns a .236 batting average (41-for-174) with six homers and 31 RBIs and has been stellar behind the plate throwing out 17 runners attempting to steal throughout the year. Montgomery owns a 5-1 record with a 4.05 ERA with 51 strikeouts and just nine walks in 66.2 innings pitched.

Greiner was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team May 29 and recently accepted a spot on this summer’s USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.

Greiner earned SEC Freshman of the Week after the Mississippi State series. It marked the second straight week a Gamecock had earned Freshman of the Week accolades. Greiner had a key solo home run that jumpstarted a four-run rally in the bottom of the eighth as the Gamecocks came from behind to defeat MSU 7-6. Greiner collected three hits over the weekend with a pair of doubles and the home run. He also scored two runs. He also had a grand slam in the 8-0 win over The Citadel.
