BLYTHEWOOD (Feb. 8, 2017) – The Westwood Lady Redhawks (18-4, 7-2) needed a win tonight to continue their chase to secure second place in Region III 4A. Westwood did just that, defeating the South Pointe Lady Stallions 54-40.

The Lady Redhawks went into halftime leading 30-20 as Westwood’s Unique Drake led all scorers with 14 points. South Pointe (6-14, 1-8) started the third with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit 30-28 in the early stages of the second half.

“That 3rd quarter by South Pointe put us on our heels causing us to lose focus,” Westwood head coach Gregory Bauldrick said. “I think after that early timeout it helped us get back on track.”

Westwood would answer back with a 12-6 run, pushing the lead back to 42-34 at the end of the third.

“I believe our sense of urgency came back into full swing after that timeout,” Bauldrick said. “Despite some sloppy play with turnovers and fouls, we still managed to keep our game intact and end the game right.”

Westwood would not see its lead leave double digits the remainder of the game as they finished off South Pointe 54-40.

“I am glad we are on the verge of clinching second in our region,” Bauldrick said. “I hope we continue this trend going into Senior Night and the pending playoffs.”

Drake led all scorers with 23 points. Westwood also had two other players in double figures as Mariyan Lockett scored 15 and Ja’Mani Fredrick scored 10. Westwood’s next game is Friday at home against Region winner Ridge View.
