COLUMBIA (March 16, 2016) – The Fairfield Central lady Griffins softball team continued their hot start to 2016 Monday night at Lower Richland with a dominating 18-5 win.

The Griffins performance was especially impressive considering only 10 players traveled for the game.

Trenatee Roberts picked up the win, going five innings in the circle, allowing five runs and striking out seven.

The game looked like it would be a tough one early on with both teams picking up a run in the first inning.

The Lady Griffins picked things up in the second, getting two quick runs. Roberts and some solid defense would keep the Lady Diamond Hornets off the scoreboard, and Fairfield Central finished the second inning with a 3-1 lead.

After the Lady Griffins added a pair of runs in the third, the Lower Richland offense showed up. The Diamond Hornets picked up three runs on two hits and two errors to close the gap to a one-run lead.

Despite being a bit rattled, Roberts pulled it together and picked up two of her seven strikeouts to end the inning.

With the Diamond Hornets trying to catch up, the Lady Griffin bats came alive in the fourth inning. Fairfield Central took advantage of two errors and added three hits and a walk to put five runs on the board.

The bottom of the fourth saw a tenacious effort to rally the troops as Lower Richland loaded the bases with no outs, but the Diamond Hornets could only manage to get a single run.

The fifth inning saw a new pitcher from Lower Richland and the end of the Diamond Hornets’ hope.

The Griffins picked up eight runs on just two hits thanks to five walks and three batters being hit by wild pitches. The inning didn’t come to a close until the Lady Griffins stepped off base for intentional outs.

The Diamond Hornets came to the plate down 18-5 with hopes of a rally, but Roberts quickly ended that hope with two quick strikeouts and a ground out to finish the game.

Coach Gwen Rouse said she was especially pleased with the performance of sophomore Chyna Woodard, who went 4-for-4 with a triple and scored four times.

“Chyna has hit the ball well the last three games,” Rouse said. “And I’m talking about hits. She’s been hitting the ball, really hitting the ball. The balls she has been hitting would be good against anybody. Those are not routine fly balls, those are shots.”

The Lady Griffins hit the road next week, traveling to Great Falls Monday and Pelion Tuesday for 6 p.m. starts. They return home next Thursday to host Keenan at 6:15 p.m.
