It’s the Arts

In The State newspaper on July 9, Frank Bruni of The New York Times wrote an article on Charleston Mayor Joe Riley. He stated that he was curious about the perspective of a leader who had clearly gotten a whole lot right.

The article stated Riley’s reasons for pushing for the Spoleto Festival as: “It forced the city to accept the responsibility of putting on something world-class.”

“You need to commit a city to excellence,” Riley is quoted, “and the arts expose you to that.”
